Lawyer: double standards are applied to Movsum Samedov

On Thursday the imprisoned Movsum Samedov stopped the hunger strike that began 17 days ago, said his  lawyer Yalcin Imanov. He recalled that Samedov was on hunger strike in protest against the amendments to the Constitution.  The lawyer met  with Samedov on September 15 in the Gobustan prison.

"Movsum Samedov stopped the hunger strike on 15 September. On the same day he ended his 15-day disciplinary punishment, and  was returned from the cooler into the camera," said the lawyer. The lawyer complained about the lack of adequate response to the hunger strike Samedov from local and international NGOs, political parties of Azerbaijan. In general, according to Imanov, international human rights organizations took a contemplative stance against violations of the rights Samedov.

At the same time the lawyer   condemned the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

" A few days ago  in the ECHR  copleted  communication on two complaints  of Samedov, but the decision has not yet been announced. This is a manifestation of "double standards",  because in the cases of some individuals solutions  are announced in the same year," said the lawyer.

Samedov was arrested in January 2011 after he severely criticized the Azerbaijani authorities for corruption and violation of the rights of believers. On October 7 of that year, Samadov and a number of IPA and theologians, activists have been sentenced to long prison terms on charges of illegal possession of weapons, trying to seize power, and others.

Samedov  was imprisoned for 12 years.  European Court started communication on the case of the Human Rights.

On October 9, 2014  by the decision of the Garadagh District Court Samedov was transferred from the  jail N12 to the Gobustan prison with strict regime for 2 years. Tightening the conditions was motivated by the breach of discipline by  Samedov. However, according to some information,  the true reason was the rise in popularity  of Samedov among prisoners, many of whom began to make religious rituals. -16B03--
