Lawyer Khalid Bagirov: the arrest of Omar Mamedov is politically motivated
A lawyer Khalid Bagirov met today in jail with youth activist Omar Mamedov, who was arrested on charges of illegal drug use. According to Bagirov, Mamedov rejects charges against him. The young man was arrested on January 24 at the exit from the dental clinic and captured by persons in civilian clothes, and then delivered to the Office to Combat Drugs of the Interior Ministry. According to investigators, he allegedly had six grams of heroin. However, Mamedov said that the drugs were planted. Search of his clothing was held without a lawyer. During the first interrogation he was even deprived of the state attorney.
At the same time the young man was subject to physical pressure and beaten.
However, according to the lawyer, Mamedov intends to defend his rights. He said that he was ready to arrest because previously he was subjected to pressure because of his publications in social networks on the Internet.
Bagirov compared the case of Mamedov with the case of Abdul Abilova, a blogger, who was arrested on a similar scenario and article charges. Both young men were administrators of pages in facebook, which contained criticism of the authorities. An appeal was made on Mamedov's arrest.
Omar Mamedov is the leader of the youth movement "Akhyn" ("Feed") and a member of the Civil Solidarity Party (CSP.) He was arrested on January 24, and the next day the court chose against Mamedov preventive measure arrest for three months.
A 19-year-old Mamedov is charged under Article 234.4.3 (illegal possession and drug trafficking.) He faces a sentence of up to 12 years in prison.
Mamedov was active in social networks on the Internet and, in particular, was one of the administrators of the page "Lists of AzTV" in Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pazaztv?fref=ts), where cartoons , collages, comments ridiculing vices by authorities were placed.–06B--
