Legal Enlightenment Center (LEC) welcomes the release of Intigam Aliyev
A well-known lawyer, legal director of the Legal Enlightenment Center Intigam Aliyev is the last of those arrested in 2012-2014 Azerbaijani human rights activists, released on March 28, the decision of the Plenum of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan.
It became possible thank to additional cassation appeal filed by Prosecutor General's Office after an almost 20-month international campaign, said the Human Rights Centre of Azerbaijan (HRCA.)
The LEC welcomes the decision to release human rights activist, and hopes that it will serve as a further normalization of relations between the authorities and civil society of the country.
"We hope that the essence of the criminal charges against him will be fairly investigated by the European Court of Human Rights, which has already communicated his complaint," said the head of the OCA Eldar Zeynalov.
It should be noted that since October 2014 the issue of political prisoners has been a subject of dialogue between the Azerbaijani human rights activists and the authorities in the framework of the Joint Working Group on Human Rights. During this time, of the lists of alleged political prisoners by the pardon or commutation of the sentence were released at least 37 political prisoners. However, some convicted of these lists, are still in custody, and their fate is still under discussion with the authorities. —0—
