Man Who Arranged Self-immolation Still in Intensive Care
Baku / 25.05.17 / Turan: The state of Ramiz Manafov, who staged a self-immolation act before the office of Bank Respublika, remains difficult. As reported by Turan in the burn department of Hospital No. 5, the victim is still in intensive care, where he is being treated due to extensive and severe burns on his body and in the airways.
The reason of this desperate step of Manafov was his debt to the bank. After two devaluations of the manat, the loan issued in USD grew twice. All this created numerous conflicts between banks and credit-receiving citizens.
The clarification of relations with the bank's employees was completed by the fact that Manafov poured gasoline on himself and set fire to it.
According to unconfirmed reports, Manafov's apartment was pledged to the bank and he could lose it.
After the incident, Bank Respublika promised to make a statement with explanation of the case, but it did not do so. -02D-

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
