Media Review July 10, 2019

Inclusion of the Sheki Khan"s Palace and the historical part of the city in the list of the World Heritage Committee, delaying the course of judicial and legal reforms, and discussion of the issue of compensation to residents of the Bayil slope are the topics of today's media.

The newspaper Azerbaijan writes about the inclusion of the Khan's Palace in Sheki and the historic part of the city in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

The author regards this event as a great victory for the policy of President Ilham Aliyev. The article reminds that the city of Sheki is over 2700 years old. A lot of experts visited Sheki, who gave their recommendations, and thanks to the head of state, restoration work was carried out, which resulted in the above-mentioned event.

The website Oxu.az writes that judicial and legal reforms are moving too slowly. However, it is the implementation of this reform that is the most important, said MP Vahid Ahmedov. Yesterday"s plenary meeting of the Milli Majlis should have considered the issue of creating specialized courts. This draft law provides for the appointment of another 200 judges who will consider commercial litigation. The deputy stressed that reforms in the judicial legal system are proceeding very slowly, although the deputies have high expectations from these reforms. It is very important to properly solve the personnel issue, said Ahmedov.

The website Bizimyol.info publishes the opinion of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the State Exams Center Maleika Abbaszadeh. It is about replacing the 700-point system. According to her, there are no problems in this matter, and the only reason is that the population will get used to the innovation for a long time.

Educational expert Kamran Asadov believes that in order to move to the new system, it is necessary to change the number of questions and assessments.

For 27 years, the country has had a 700-point system, although it is possible to switch to 100, and 500, or 1,000 points. Whatever the scale of assessment, the main thing is that it should serve the principle of knowledge assessment.

The newspaper Yeni Musavat writes about compensation to residents of the Bayil slope. Almost 50% of the houses on the slopes were demolished due to a landslide. This is the lower part of the Bayil slope, which is otherwise referred to as the TV Tower zone.

In December 2017 and January 2018, 98 families were resettled. Many agreed with the amount of compensation, but some did not.

In May 2019, the Cabinet allocated 9,201,533 manat for the resettlement of the residents.

Per square meter compensation amounted to 600-700 manat. Depending on the number of members, from 200 to 300 manat is allocated for temporary rental of housing to each family.
