Military veterans in Nakhchivan are evicted

A group of military retirees and veterans in the city of Nakhchivan are forcibly evicted from their apartments. According to Turan’s regional correspondent, veteran Abdullah Orujov, since 1977 to 1995 was on the military service. In 1992, he was a commander in the war zone in Sadarak.

"In 1987, we received a warrant. Now, executives of the Mayor's Office of Nakhchivan brought the police here, and demanded the early release of the apartment. In return, they offer us the bare ground away from the city. I'm 60 years old, and I have no strength and means to build a house," said Orujov to the regional correspondent.

Another military veteran, Ali Mammadov, said that for a long time he served in a combat zone and was wounded. He is not offered a compensation.

The area, where military live, was formerly a military town, but   later it was transferred to the balance of the executive branch of Nakhchivan, and many apartments were  privatized. Nine families of military servants appealed to the Nakhchivan City Court, but the latter passed a decision in favor of the city authorities.

Veterans have filed an appeal and intend to bring the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

They  were received by head of the legal department Jalil Allahverdiev, who on behalf of the head of the NAR, Vasif Talibov,  demanded  to free apartments quickly. The military were not received by Talibov.

On May 14 several people refused to leave their apartments, were arrested and taken to the police. After the intervention of local human rights activists, they were released.

Previously light and gas in their apartments were turned off. People were given two days to move.

The head of the region, Vugar Safar said that if residents do not voluntarily free  the apartment,  a force will be used.

Nine families sent complaints to the Azerbaijani President, the Parliament, the wife of the President, Mehriban Aliyeva, and international organizations. Turan failed to  get comments from the local authorities, and they left the town without answering reporters' questions.
