Ministry of Emergency Situations Accuses Owners of Shopping Center of Ignoring Fire Safety
Baku / 26.03.19 / Turan: Measures to suppress the fires in the Diglas shopping center continued until Tuesday evening. The total area of the fire exceeded 2 hectares, Akbar Novruzov, the Chief of Staff of the Fire Service of the Emergency Ministry, told reporters.
After the fire was extinguished on 4 floors of the building, the fight against fire continued in the basement, he said.
According to Novruzov, the reason for such a strong fire is ignoring the fire safety rules by the owners of the shopping center.
"None of the floors of the shopping center had a fire protection system," he stressed.
The actions of the firefighters were severely hampered by the traffic jam created around the shopping center, as well as by the lack of sources of water to extinguish the fire. Water had to be delivered from a distance of two kilometers, Novruzov said.
As for the causes of the fire, the law enforcement agencies will be engaged in its investigation, the Emergencies Minister Kamaleddin Heydarov said in turn. According to the preliminary version, the fire started in a flower shop.
More than 100 firefighters, more than 20 units of special equipment and three Emergency Situations Ministry helicopters were involved in extinguishing the fire. -02D-
