Baku/07.06.21/Turan: Mother of convicted human rights activist and journalist Elchin Mammad Rakhil Mammadli appealed to President Ilham Aliyev to intervene and assist in restoring justice for her son.

Note that Mamed was arrested in March 2020 and sentenced to 4 years in prison on charges of theft and illegal possession of ammunition. The mother believes that the charges were fabricated in retaliation for criticizing officials for human rights violations and corruption.

In addition, Mamed as a legal representative attended trials of hundreds of citizens defending the rights of citizens.

Note he was repeatedly called to the police and the prosecutor's office and threatened. Finally, in the end of 2019 he was threatened with death. Appeals to law enforcement agencies to investigate the threats gave no results, the mother noted.

Mamed was arrested a few days after he published a critical report on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.

The mother of the convicted person complains about serious health problems of her son and the fact that her two grandchildren are deprived of paternal care.

On the eve of the consideration of Mammad's appeal at the Supreme Court on July 7, the mother asks Aliyev to intervene and ensure the restoration of justice. She hopes that the Supreme Court will revoke resolutions of the previous trials and release her son.

On October 17, 2020, the Sumgayit City Court sentenced Elchin Mammad to 4 years of imprisonment finding him guilty of "theft" and "illegal possession of ammunition and weapons".

It has to be kept in mind that the human rights activist was arrested in March 2020. A woman to whom he provided legal assistance complained about him. Before that, the said woman had also complained about the site editor criminal.az Anar Mammadov.

Mammad links the criminal case to his human rights activities. Thus, international organizations Amnesty International, PEN, FIACAT, etc. condemned the arrest of Mammad. Local human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.—06B-
