MRI condemns the conviction against Shirin Jafari
Media Rights Institute (MRI), condemned a statement due to conviction against Shirin Jafari, the founder of the “Gundem Heber” newspaper.
The court found Jafari guilty under the Article 213.2.2 (tax evasion on a large sum), and sentenced him to three years of probation, and ordered to pay the tax debt in the amount of 71 thousand manat.
MRI condemns the criminal prosecution of journalists for unconfirmed allegations in court, and noted that such sentences intimidate journalists criticizing the government. MRI hopes that the Court of Appeal will abolish unjust sentence.—06D--
