National Council and “Defense Line” called on authorities to stop torturing arrested
Baku / 25.09.20 / Turan: The National Council of Democratic Forces and the “Defense Line” human rights organization issued statements condemning the Azerbaijani authorities for using torture against arrested opponents of the government.
The reason for the statements was a letter from the arrested activist of the Popular Front Party, Agil Maharramli, published on social networks. The activist describes the conditions of detention of the infected with the coronavirus in jail N 2 and the treatment of prisoners at the Tuberculosis Hospital of the Penitentiary Service.
During 41 lazy days in the Tuberculosis Institution (Tubzon), the infected were put in a punishment cell, were not given medicine, were not given mattresses, soap, and were not allowed to go to the toilet.
When the condition of the prisoners worsened, the doctors were not called. Those who were indignant were beaten and laid naked on metal beds. To make a phone call, they extorted 5 manats.
The National Council regards the described facts as the use of torture, as a traditional method of government administration. This was started after the meeting of the National Council on October 19 last year. It was then that the leaders and activists of the Popular Front Party and the National Council were beaten and detained and tortured while under arrest.
The National Council called on international organizations to react to these lawlessness, and the people of the country to protest against the policy pursued by the authorities.
In turn, the "Defense Line" sharply condemned the Penitentiary Service for such treatment of Agil Maharramli and other oppositionists, inhuman treatment of infected with coronavirus in the Medical Institution of the Ministry of Justice.-03D-
