PCTA condemned arrest of Talysh blogger
Baku/28.07.20/Turan: The Public Council of the Talysh of Azerbaijan (PCTA) issued a statement regarding the arrest of blogger Aslan Gurbanov.
27-year-old Gurbanov, suffering from severe epilepsy, was detained on July 14 by officers of the State Security Service using force in the village of Bina. During the arrest, he lost consciousness and fought in convulsions, reads the statement of the PCTA.
The young man was charged under Article 281.2 (open calls against the state) and 283.1 (incitement of national, religious, social hatred) of the Criminal Code. The court arrested Gurbanov for 4 months because of the blogger's publications on facebook and instagram.
On a page in instağram entitled: “caspi_cadus_talysh” he published songs, poems and prose of Talysh authors, promoted heroes of Talysh origin, language and literature of Talysh.
“There was no political content in these publications of compatriots in Azerbaijan and Iran,” the statement goes on to say.
This does not give grounds to convict a young man who served in 2011-2012 on Murovdag, and was awarded for courage, the authors of the statement say.
PCTA sees parallels in this case with the arrest in 2007 of the Talysh scientist Novruzali Mammadov, who was “incriminated” with “propaganda of Talyshism” (he died from a serious illness in prison in 2009.)
The arrest of Gurbanov damages interethnic relations and is politically motivated. For this reason, the OCTA demands the immediate release of Gurbanov.
The PCTA also condemned the arrests of activists after the July 14-15 rally in support of the army.
Gurbanov's relatives confirmed that he was arrested in connection with publications on social networks several years ago. However, the charges are unfounded.
Gurbanov's lawyer Ramiz Mammadov, in an interview with Turan, refrained from commenting in connection with the subscription not to disclose the secrets of the investigation. He just noted that the young man partially admits his guilt and does not complain about the conditions of detention.
It was not possible to get comments from the State Security Service. –06B-

On a brisk November evening, the residents of Baku gathered along the waterfront of the Caspian Sea, stunned by what appeared to be the washed-up body of a colossal whale. At 16 meters long, the creature’s seemingly lifeless form and pungent odor left many convinced they were witnessing an ecological tragedy. By that night, however, the mysterious visitor had departed, loaded onto a cargo platform and whisked away to the airport.
