Press Review December 15, 2017
Azerbaijan's position at the Istanbul Summit on Jerusalem, Azerishig's threats to customers to cut off electricity, the level of corruption in the country, and the moral crisis are the leading topics of today's press.
The newspaper Azerbaijan assesses the Istanbul OIC Summit in the light of the US President"s statement about the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, as well as the speech of Ilham Aliyev at this forum, where he also touched upon the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
The newspaper Echo published an article entitled "Where in Azerbaijan They Take Bribes". Today, the situation with domestic corruption in Azerbaijan has become much better, and this is due to the appearance of the Asan Khidmet service. Perhaps, it has become the best thing that the government has recently done for the population of Azerbaijan.
But we cannot say that we managed to overcome corruption completely and some spheres of our life are still very corrupt, and bribes are required to obtain permits for something. For example, municipalities, executive authorities, social authorities issue building permits. In all of the above structures, citizens are still required bribes.
The newspaper Novoye Vremya comments on the threats of Azerishig to turn off the light to the debtors. On the other hand, unreasonably high tariffs for light are obvious. The leadership of Azerishig for several years declares financial difficulties despite the inflated tariffs, huge government investments and loans from international financial institutions.
