Prolonged Arrest of Siraj Kerimli
The Narimanov court on Saturday extended for another two months, until February 17, the term of arrest Siraj Kerimli, recognized by Amnesty International as «prisoner of conscience."
Recall that Kerimli was arrested in mid-July, and his brother, an activist of the party Musavat, Faraj Kerimli was also arrested a week later. The brothers are accused of drug trafficking.
Their father Raghif Kerimli is also an activist of Musavat.
Local human rights organizations believe the brothers Kerimli are political prisoners.
The lawyer Nemat Kerimli told Turan the term of arrest of Siraj Kerimli was unreasonably prolonged the second time.
"This practice is usually applied in particularly complex cases. In the Siraj case there are no difficulties. He is being held as a political hostage.
Siraj is not involved in politics and was arrested because of his brother and father, said the lawyer.
The defender also informed about the deterioration of the health of Siraj, who has sharp heart pains. He was examined by doctors from the Ministry of Justice Medical Department and he was prescribed a couple of drugs. But no good comes of this treatment.
"We have appealed to the leadership to transfer Siraj from prison to hospital. The Ombudsman also appealed to the Prison Service with the same proposal, but so far there are no results," said the lawyer.
He intends to appeal against the extension of the detention to the Court of Appeal. -06D-
