Republican of the Year Prize Awarded to Yalchin Imanov
Baku / 02.06.19 / Turan: The Republican of the Year Award, annually awarded by the civil movement D18 on the occasion of the Republic Day, this time was presented to the renowned lawyer Yalchin Imanov. The award ceremony took place on June 1st.
"The award is aimed at focusing on problems with respect for republican values in Azerbaijan," said the leader of the D18 movement, Ruslan Izzetli.
The prize has been awarded since 2014. Its laureates were the leader of the REAL party Ilgar Mammadov, the human rights activist Intigam Aliyev, the journalist Seymour Hazi, and the youth activist Ilkin Rustamzadeh.
"Last year, we awarded the prize to the deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party, Ms. Gezyal Bayramly, who was languishing in prison at that time. By this we showed that in 1918 the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic granted women electoral rights, which was then in a very small number of European countries, and 100 years later a woman could be in prison for political activities," said Izzetli.
And the lawyer Yalchin Imanov became the laureate of 2019, then Izzetli reported.
Yalchin Imanov for selflessly and professionally performing his duties and disclosing the facts of torture to his clients, faced pressure and was expelled from the Bar based on a contrived complaint of the Prison Service.
Imanov gratefully accepted the award and noted that democratic values and life of the ADR founders should be a reference point and an example for every citizen of Azerbaijan.
Referring to the position of the legal profession, he noted that now the lawyer Shahla Humbatova is facing pressure.
"We must determine our position in order not to lose the independence of the legal profession. The values and criteria for us should be independence and respect for human rights. Thanks for the reward," Imanov said. -0--
