Residents of Former Soviet Street Area Never Received Full Compensation
Baku / 25.09.20 / Turan: Today, a group of residents of the territory previously called Soviet Street tried to hold a protest in front of the building of the Executive Power of the Yasamal district of Baku. They demanded a meeting with the head of the district, complaining about not paying them compensation for the demolished housing.
“They cut our money. Our homes were demolished without warning, destroying our property. Now we are not given the required compensation,” said one of the participants of the action.
Police officers asked one protester representative to go to the district administration building. This caused discontent among other participants in the action.
“They always let in the same person, not a representative delegated by us. We do not know what he is talking about, but the problem is not being solved,” said another participant in the action.
However, the police did not allow other representatives to enter the building. The action took place without incident.
The demolition of the Soviet Street Area began in 2014. On the territory of 26 hectares, 4,500 residential and non-residential buildings were demolished. In most cases, the purchase and sale was carried out by mutual agreement. At the second stage, 1,920 houses on 13 hectares were demolished.
At both stages, the owners did not agree with the proposed compensation in the amount of AZN 1,500 per 1 sq. m. They periodically held protests. Some citizens even applied to the ECHR. — 21B06-
