Residents of the former "Sovetskaya" street protest again
Baku/04.03.21/Turan: Residents of the area of the former street “Sovetskaya” on Thursday held a protest in front of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Their homes were demolished in 2014. Since then, residents have been vainly complaining about unfair compensation. They claim that the squares of their houses were calculated incorrectly and that they were not fully compensated; and the number of family members was not taken into account.
“We demand the restoration of our rights and the funds due to us. We were evicted from the city center, so let them pay fair compensation,” said one of the protesters.
An employee of the Cabinet of Ministers came out to the protesters, who accepted their statements. After that, the police pushed citizens away from the building of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The demolition of Sovetskaya Street began in 2014. On an area of 26 hectares, about 4,500 residential and non-residential buildings were demolished. At the second stage, another 920 buildings were demolished on an area of 13 hectares.
At both stages, there were owners who did not agree with the proposed compensation in the amount of 1,500 manats per square meter of housing. They periodically hold protests.
Some even went to the European Court of Human Rights. Demolition continues in this area.-22C-

On a brisk November evening, the residents of Baku gathered along the waterfront of the Caspian Sea, stunned by what appeared to be the washed-up body of a colossal whale. At 16 meters long, the creature’s seemingly lifeless form and pungent odor left many convinced they were witnessing an ecological tragedy. By that night, however, the mysterious visitor had departed, loaded onto a cargo platform and whisked away to the airport.
