Shahriyar Mammadyarov Takes Second Place in Tournament of Candidates for World Chess Cup
Baku / 28.03.18 / Turan: The Azerbaijani representative Shahriyar Mammadyarov took the second place at the tournament of candidates for the World Chess Cup in Berlin.
Mammadyarov scored eight points, losing a point to the winner of the tournament, Fabiano Caruana from the US.
Mammadyarov had a chance to become a winner if in the final game Caruana lost to the Russian representative Grischuk, but Caruana won, playing black.
Thus, Caruana received the right to fight for the world championship at a meeting with the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen.
According to the organizers of the tournament, the prize fund amounted to 480 thousand euros. The winner of the tournament received 95 thousand euros, and Shahriyar Mammadyarov received EUR 88 thousand. The rest of the participants will receive the rest in accordance with the place in the standings.
Let us note that Mammadyarov's current achievement is the highest figure for a representative of Azerbaijan after the victory of Garry Kasparov from Baku in the fight for the title of world chess champion. -02D-
