Taleh Bagirzadeh's Family Concerned for His Fate

Baku / 10.02.19 / Turan: The family of the leader of the Muslim Unity Movement (MUM) Taleh Bagirzadeh is concerned for his fate. After he went on hunger strike, the Bagirzadeh family has no information about his health.

Bagirzadeh and another religious activist Abbas Hussein went on a hunger strike from January 31 and February 3, respectively, in protest against the torture of them. This was previously stated by their family members.

On February 8, the lawyer Bahruz Bayramov was not allowed to see Bagirzadeh. Turan was informed by the MUM leader's wife, Leila Ismailzadeh. She said she last talked to her husband on the phone on January 28, and after that there was no connection with him.

"On February 8, the lawyer Bahruz Bayramov was again denied a meeting with Taleh. The lawyer was told that Taleh did not want to meet him. The prison director himself accepted the lawyer and began to reassure him that Taleh was all right. When the lawyer asked about Taleh"s hunger strike, the prison director said: "Taleh himself says he is on a hunger strike, but I don"t feel it, as he doesn"t look like a starving person." Previously, the Prison Service claimed that Taleh did not go on a hunger strike, but now the director says that "he doesn"t look like a starving person," Ismailzadeh said.

Since the lawyer was not allowed to meet with Bagirzadeh, he sent him a note. "The lawyer wrote that he as his lawyer, his family members and all his loving friends asked him to stop the hunger strike. An employee of the prison assured us that he delivered the letter to Taleh and my husband allegedly said that he "understood that." All this further intensifies our anxiety. If Taleh is all right, then why does he refuse to meet with the lawyer, and why is he not allowed to call us?" Ismayilzadeh said.

In the public relations department of the Prison Service, the hunger strike in the Gobustan prison and the torture of prisoners are denied altogether.

Earlier, Bagirzadeh appealed to local and international organizations, activists of social networks and the National Council of Democratic Forces not to remain indifferent to repression against those convicted in the Gobustan prison.

Bagirzadeh and Hussein were arrested in November 2016 during the special operation in Nardaran and sentenced to 20 years in prison each on charges of terrorism and other serious crimes. Local human rights defenders recognize them as political prisoners. -06B-
