The controversy around the “Terter case” is not justified – general prosecutor
Baku/10.05.21/Turan: General Prosecutor Kamran Aliyev considers the controversy around the "Terter case" unfounded.
Commenting to journalists on the numerous publications on this topic in social networks, the General Prosecutor said that the case was investigated back in 2017, specific criminal offences took place and relevant court decisions were issued.
"The public has been informed in detail and it is absurd to make an unwarranted fuss," he said.
It should be recalled that The General Prosecutor's Office, State Security Service, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a joint statement in 2017 that a group of soldiers and civilians in the Tartar district had been detained for spying for Armenian security services.
On 3 May 2017, the Military Prosecutor's Office opened a criminal case under Article 274 (high treason) of the Criminal Code. The detainees were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment.
Human rights organisations later alleged massive violations, torture during the investigation of the “Terter case”.
Criminal cases were brought against 200 people. At least 10 soldiers died as a result of torture, five of whom were later acquitted.
At least 25 people are currently in custody, sentenced between 7 and 20 years on charges of treason and other crimes.
Subsequently, 101 military personnel were found to be victims and 16 members of the Defence Ministry were arrested and convicted of torture.
However, the unit commander and other officers have not been prosecuted for torture. In general, the country's law enforcement authorities do not accept criticism, despite the fact that five of the military men who died during the arrest and investigation were later acquitted by the courts.
Family members whose loved ones were killed or undeservedly persecuted have repeatedly protested, demanding that those responsible be punished and that the undeserved victims be removed from the stigma of being traitors.-0-
