The Court of Appeal again rejected the complaint on the case of blocking sites
Baku / 19.12.17 / Turan: The Baku Court of Appeal under the chairmanship of Abidin Huseynov, after repeated postpones, held a trial on a complaint about blocking a number of websites criticizing the government of Azerbaijan.
The Electronic Security Center on March 27 blocked a number of independent and opposition sites: azadliq.info (Azadlig newspaper site), azadliq.org (Azadlig Radio), azerbaycansaati.com ("Azerbaijan Hour" program, broadcasting from Europe), meydan.tv and Turan TV (an opposition television channel broadcasting from Europe).
After that, the ministry appealed to the court to approve the decision, accusing the websites of violating the "legitimate interests of society and the state," calls for religious radicalism, etc.
Representatives of the sites rejected these allegations and indicated that the blocking of sites is contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights, the European Court's decision on the case of blocking sites in Turkey, the decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of 2016.
It was pointed out that restrictions could only concern specific individual information. Nevertheless, on May 12, the Sabail District Court granted a claim against the sites. Defendants filed an appeal. During today's meeting, representatives of sites again pointed out the unreasonableness of the blocking of websites due to some separate information.
In addition, it was required to give an explanation of how long the sites were blocked.
But this did not follow. In the end, the complaint was rejected. Representatives of the sites said that they will file a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court. -06D-

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
