The Court of Appeal upheld the verdict against the PFPA activist
Baku/16.02.21/Turan: On February 16, the Baku Court of Appeal did not satisfy the complaint of the activist of the Popular Front Party, Mohammed Imanli. The verdict of the court of first instance on imprisonment for 1 year for the spread of coronavirus infection was upheld.
Imanli was detained after participating in a demonstration on July 14-15, 2020 in support of the army. At the same time, a criminal case was initiated against him under the Article 139-1 (Violation of anti-epidemiological, sanitary-hygienic or quarantine regimes) of the Criminal Code. The Sabunchi District Court sentenced him to 1 year in prison.
Imanli denies the charge and says that his arrest is because of the opposition activities; he stated that before his arrest, he had not had a coronavirus infection and no evidence was if he was a carrier of COVID-19.
A cassation appeal will be submitted to the Supreme Court against the decision of the Court of Appeal, lawyer Asabali Mustafayev said. The defense has already sent a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights about the choice of a preventive measure in the form of arrest.
Mohammed Imanli was recognized by human rights activists as a political prisoner. –16D06-
