The Court of Appeal upholds the verdict of Afgan Sadygov
Baku / 26.05.17 / Turan: The Shirvan Court of Appealup held the verdict to journalist Afgan Sadygov.
The founder and editor of the site of azel.tv acting in the Jalilabad region (211 km south of Baku) Afghan Sadigov was detained on November 22, 2016 on charges of causing damage to health from hooligan motives - article 127.2.3 of the Criminal Code and sentenced to 2.5 years.
The journalist rejected the accusations, saying that a provocation was committed against him in order to stop the criticism of the district authorities. So, in the reception of the head of the district administration he was attacked by a trained woman, and then the journalist was accused of hooliganism.
At the trial, Elchin Sadigov, lawyer, made his closing remarks. He called the case fabricated.
"The key point of this case is that medical certificates concerning the victim were fabricated.
From the history of the disease it can be seen that the victim entered the hospital at 15.30.
In the same act, drawn up in the executive power of the Jalilabad region, it is stated that the "victim" was taken to the hospital by "ambulance" at 10.30. In testimony, in documents drawn up by the investigator, this non-docking is obvious. This shows that the criminal case was fabricated," said the lawyer.
He asked the court to overturn the verdict of the Jalilabad region and acquit the journalist.
The journalist himself said that his "crime" is in his journalistic work.
"I wrote in my publications that ordinary people cannot buy one kilo of chicken, and ministers' children eat meat. " People in villages burn manure for heating, and the government gives gas to churches for free. I wanted to force to give up my position, but in vain. I will return to my previous job after the end of my arrest. This is my choice, and even if once again I will go to court, I will not give it up," the lawyer said the words of Afghan Sadygov. In response to the verdict, the accused said: "I did not expect more from the justice system of the New Azerbaijan Party." - 06D--
