Adrian Mutu
The famous Adrian Mutu has become the new head coach of FC Neftchi
Baku/11.07.23/Turan: A former Romanian football player, known for his performances in leading European clubs, Adrian Mutu has become the new head coach of Baku "Neftchi." A 2-year contract has been signed with him. Mutu stated that his goal is to "return "Neftchi" to its deserved place - to the top in Azerbaijan," and "worthily" represent the country in Europe.
A 44-year-old Mutu, in addition to Romanian teams, played for such giants of European football as the English club Chelsea, Italian Inter, Juventus, Fiorentina. Mutu was also a forward for the Romanian national team.
However, Mutu's coaching career is not so brilliant – he was a mentor to a number of clubs in Romania and the UAE.
As the head coach of "Neftchi," Mutu was replaced by another Romanian, Laurenziu Regecampf, under whom the Baku club further worsened its position and finished the 2022/2023 Azerbaijani Championship in third place, dropping a step lower than in the previous season.
Thus, Mutu headed "Neftchi" in two weeks of the team's first match in the second qualifying round of the Conference League, where the Baku team's opponent will be the winner of the pair "Zheleznichar" (Sarajevo) – "Dynamo" (Minsk). The first match will take place on July 27.
Interestingly, "Neftchi" is currently at a tournament in St. Petersburg and the team will return from Russia after July 18; and the head coach will have only a week left to prepare the team for the European meeting. ---06B--
