The trial in the case of Vugar Safarli
Baku/06.07.21/Turan: The investigation of the criminal case against the former head of the State Media Support Fund Vugar Safarli has been completed and sent to court. Safarli is accused of misappropriation of 6 million manats, falsification of documents during the implementation of a project to build two houses for journalists in Baku.
Safarli headed the State Fund for Media Development Support in 2009-2020. During these years, he rented the premises of the Foundation at an inflated price in the International Press Center, which belonged to the former assistant to the head of state, Ali Hasanov. The damage to the state amounted to more than 800 thousand manats.
The prosecutor's office also reported on the misappropriation of 300 thousand manats by Safarli by transferring these funds to the account of the Football-Gol newspaper owned by his relative, as well as embezzling more than 200 thousand manats during the purchase of stationery and holding ceremonies.
Having entered into a criminal conspiracy with other persons, Safarli placed in 2015-2018. The stolen funds to accounts in one of the commercial banks for a total amount of 5 million 796 thousand manats.
He was charged under several Articles of the Criminal Code: 179.4 (embezzlement on an especially large scale), 193-1.3.2 (legalization of especially large funds obtained illegally), 308.2 (abuse of office, which led to serious consequences), 313 (official forgery) ... Under these articles, he faces up to 14 years in prison.
Safarli was Ali Hasanov's henchman and closest person and numerous crimes and thefts would hardly have been possible without Ali Hasanov's patronage.
Vugar Safarli was dismissed from his post in April 2020, and Ali Hasanov in November 2019. -02D-

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony. The invitation, delivered by Member of the European Parliament Michael Bloss at the COP29 climate conference, comes as Ibadoglu remains under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Azerbaijan.
