Trial in the case of the relatives of Ganimat Zahid begins
A preparatory meeting on the criminal case against Rufat and Rovshan Zahidov will tke place in the Baku Serious Crimes Court on 19 February at 14:00. Rufat is the nephew and the Rovshan is a cousin of Ganimat Zahid, chief editor of "Azadlig" newspaper and the head of the TV program "Azerbaijani hour" who is in political emigration.
Rufat and Rovshan Zahidov were arrested in July 2015. They were charged under Articles 234.4.1 (illegal drug turnover by group of persons) and 234.4.3 (drug trafficking on a large scale.) They will face from 5 to 12 years in prison, said their lawyer Behruz Bayramov. Zahid said the arrest of their relatives is politically motivated, and an attempt by authorities to force stop criticising the government. -03B-

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony. The invitation, delivered by Member of the European Parliament Michael Bloss at the COP29 climate conference, comes as Ibadoglu remains under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Azerbaijan.
