Trial in the case of Tofig Yagublu
Baku / 05.08.20 / Turan: On August 5, in the Nizami Court of Baku, chaired by Nariman Mehdiyev, the considered the case of the deputy chairman of the Musavat party and member of the National Council Tofig Yagublu.
Despite the process was open, journalists and members of the public were not allowed into the hall, including members of Yagublu's family.
At the meeting, the state prosecutor read out the accusation, and the lawyers made motions.
At the end of the hearing, lawyer Nemat Karimli told reporters that the judge rejected all the requests. The trial was over, but the date of the next trial was not announced.
Tofig Yagublu was arrested on charges of hooliganism and bodily harm on March 22, 2020.
The arrest took place several days after the speech of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev with threats against the opposition.
Yagublu faces up to 7 years in prison. His "crime" was expressed in the fact that another car ran into his parked car and those sitting in it attacked him, and then blamed Yagublu himself.
Many international organizations condemned Yagublu's arrest, calling on the authorities to release him immediately. Companions of the oppositionist are sure that the real reason for the arrest is the harsh criticism of the authorities' policies and Yagublu's Facebook post. -06B-
