"We have come to the hot spot of geopolitical processes" - Orujlu expert
Baku/07.10.23/Turan: The information itself about the participation of an Afghan citizen in planning a terrorist attack against a foreign embassy in Azerbaijan should not be surprising. There is a practice when the secret services of one country or terrorist organizations operating on its territory use citizens of another country to commit terrorist attacks in a third country, a former officer of the special services of Azerbaijan political scientist Arastun Orujlu told to the interview to the Azerbaijani service of the "Voice of America", commenting on today's report of the Azerbaijani State Security Service on the arrest of an Afghan citizen on charges of planning terrorist attacks on the territory of Azerbaijan, including against a foreign embassy.
"From this point of view, it is extremely important to conduct an objective investigation to identify the causes and motives of the crime," Orujlu said. He drew attention to the difficult geopolitical situation in the region.
"We have come to the hotspot of geopolitical processes. States, organizations and various institutions with interests in the region will certainly use all means. It can be an instrument of political pressure. Here economic factors can be used as a means of pressure. Terror factors can also be used, which is a universal instrument of pressure," Orujlu continued.
In his opinion, various provocations against Azerbaijan are possible. "We have to be ready for them. Appropriate preventive measures should be taken to prevent them," the expert continued.
However, in his opinion, the main thing is that "to identify cases of real danger, to identify real persons, institutions, states behind real threats of terrorist crimes and to put them before the facts."
At the same time, he noted that such threats should not be used for domestic political purposes for the sake of "political conjuncture", which, in his opinion, has happened more than once before. --16B--
