Youth activist Muharrem Akperov arrested in Azerbaijan for 30 days

Baku/15.07.23/Turan: After the publication of a critical post on the Internet about the actions of the authorities against the inhabitants of the village of Soyudlu in the Gadabay region, youth activist Muharrem Akbarov was administratively arrested for 30 days.
He was detained on July 15 near his home in the city of Khirdalan, relatives of the activist said.
Akperov is a student at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. In Turkey, he joined the "Voice of the Revolution" platform under the Turkish Socialist Workers' Party. Three days ago, he shared a post on the platform's Instagram account about the events of Soyudlu.
In particular, he posted a photo of a wall with the inscription: “Free Soyudlu!”. Voice of the Revolution. He accompanied the photo with a text in which he wrote: “We continue to raise the voice of Söyüdlü (#Söyüdlü) in various districts of Baku.” He further notes that the platform is on the side of the inhabitants of Soyudlu, "poisoned by poisonous substances" from the mine.
The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that Akperov was arrested by a court decision for committing administrative offenses.

The Electronic Court portal reports that Akperov was found guilty under Art.
510 (petty hooliganism) and 535.1 (non-subordination to the police) of the Code of Administrative Offences.
*On June 20, the residents of Soyudlu held a protest action, claiming that a nearby gold mining enterprise was polluting the environment. The police violently dispersed the protest. As a result of the dispersal, 10 people were injured, five were detained and administratively arrested for 20 days. Another resident was fined 1,500 manats. Several more people were later detained. A commission set up by the government, headed by the Minister of Ecology, initially denied that there were any environmental problems in Soyudlu. However, after President Ilham Aliyev criticized the operation of the company operating the mine on July 10, the government acknowledged the problems and on July 14 the operation of the enterprise was temporarily stopped.

** The "Soyudlu" deposit is operated by Anglo Asian Mining PLC, which is registered in the UK with the participation of U.S. citizen Reza Vaziri, owner of RV Investments Group Services LLC.

In 1997, the Government of Azerbaijan signed a contract with RV Investments Group Services LLC to grant rights to develop a number of ore deposits, including "Seyudlu." ---0---
