Baku/12.08.22/Turan: Ex-MP and businessman Huseyn Abdullayev ("Guska"), who is serving a prison sentence, appealed to President Ilham Aliyev with a request to stop his "unjustified criminal prosecution".

Abdullayev, who received asylum in Germany, notes that he was illegally detained in Turkey and forcibly deported to Azerbaijan, where he was arrested on trumped-up charges.

Abdullayev recalls that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Arrests, recognizing his persecution as contrary to international law, decided to release him.

"For many years, officials who have been providing you with false and slanderous information about me have not implemented this decision," Abdullayev notes.

The same persons, ignoring the laws of Azerbaijan, artificially delay the consideration of his appeal for parole after the expiration of 2/3 of the sentence, he believes.

Abdullayev is sure that the head of state is not aware of these "torments and sufferings" and recalls that he was "one of the first associates" of the late Heydar Aliyev when he was still in disgrace. For this he was subjected in 1991-1992 . pressure and persecution in Nakhchivan.

Abdullayev assures the President that he has no political ambitions, nor ties with groups "hostile" to Azerbaijan."

"All such statements about me are outright lies and slander," Abdullayev writes and expresses his conviction that the head of state will put an end to his unjustified criminal prosecution.

In turn, Abdullayev's lawyer Rasul Jafarov told Turan that at this stage, the legal mechanism is active for his release after serving 2/3 of the term. The defense filed a petition in early July.

The next court hearing in this case is scheduled for September 5.

Another mechanism for Abdullayev's release could be a presidential pardon, the lawyer added.
