There are many long-standing social, economic, financial, legal, and political problems in the Azerbaijan. In particular, the recent sharp drop in oil prices and the local and global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have made it even more difficult to solve problems. The government, which was unable to solve these problems at a time when the country's financial resources were very good, seems even more helpless in the current unfavorable situation.
On the one hand, the vital social situation is deteriorating, and on the other hand, opportunities to solve them are being limited. The process of joining the opposition and independent public representatives, who do not believe in the government's promise of economic and political reforms and do not accept the results of the early parliamentary elections, is becoming more actualized.
Observations and analyzes show that the government is trying to divert the attention of the people from the incompetence of government by artificially aggravating the socio-political and psychological situation in the country, to hinder the organized organization of dissatisfied people. It is even expanding its repressive attitude towards the opposition, despite protests from the local and international community.
The government is deeply concerned about the large-scale social unrest that may occur in society in the post-pandemic period. It is unable to make the right decisions in the tense and nervous environment it faces. It thinks that if the real opposition is isolated from society, it will be much easier to direct future socio-political processes in a controlled direction.
In this situation, it does not hide its desire to form an "opposition", which is completely controlled and accepts the limited framework drawn by the government. At the same time, it expresses its intention to eliminate its real rivals by abusing the temporary international isolation created by the coronavirus. This message was especially clear in the President's congratulatory address on the Novruz holiday.
Based on political theories, we see that in free countries where democratic elections are held, both the government and the opposition are determined by the electorate. In non-free countries, the real opposition to the government is formed by dissatisfied and protesting sections.
Dissatisfied people are the only phenomenon that keeps the opposition on its feet in public opinion in our country. They are dissatisfied people who are tired of lawlessness, discrimination, and socio-economic difficulties.
No matter how hard a government, which does not hold democratic elections, tries, it will not be able to have the society accepted the "opposition", which it imagines and desires. Although this stubbornness of the government has no political perspective, dangerous consequences are not excluded.
In recent days, the government has openly targeted its main opposition. Illegal actions against the chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Ali Karimli, and active members of his party have become widespread. Internet and mobile communications were illegally cut off in Ali Karimli's house. His virtual connections with society through social networks have been blocked. In fact, there are total violations against him and his party at the state level.
It attracts attention that the government is taking planned steps in two directions. On the one hand, it wants to reduce the scale of dissatisfaction by providing some assistance to the poor, and on the other hand, it wants to isolate the opposition in order to govern the society comfortably during the social crisis. It believes that this will ensure the security and stability of its government.
In all anti-democratic societies, the people are sympathetic to the righteous one, but they obey the strong one because they are afraid of it. The inability of the people to take the side of the right encourages the government to commit further illegal acts.
Analyzes show that in the coming period, it is possible that social unrest, upheavals, and contradictions in society will increase. It may be difficult for the government to get the country out of the crisis without losses. That is why there is a greater need for solidarity and dialogue in the country than ever before. There is also a growing need to approach international democratic centers and receive their support.
Finally, social difficulties, prohibitions, pressures, and epidemics are rapidly changing the nature of society. It provokes different reactions to traditional socio-political processes in society.
Instead of creating a reliable guarantee of rights and freedoms in the country, the expansion of restrictions and the implementation of a repressive policy against the opposition deepen the complicated situation in the country.
It would be the right step for the government on this eve to refrain from escalating political relations within the country, to change the harsh rhetoric against political opponents, to end the persecution, and to release political prisoners.
