In a world marked by pressing environmental challenges, the protection of natural resources has emerged as a unifying value across nations. Environmental stewardship, once merely a topic of discourse, now commands attention and priority in nearly every global gathering. This year, the FantazEU Cultural Heritage Festival in Azerbaijan showcases this commitment through a series of events, with a special focus on the theme of water conservation. One of the highlights, the photo exhibition titled “The Water that Connects Us,” runs until November 10 at the Fabrica Gallery in Baku, casting a spotlight on the waterways that bind communities together.
Upon entering the gallery, visitors are greeted with stunning photographs of water bodies from various European countries alongside images from Azerbaijan. The embassies of Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden each contributed photographs of lakes, rivers, and coastal regions, celebrating natural sites that enrich and beautify their lands.
The exhibit serves as both an introduction to Europe’s diverse aquatic landscapes and a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect these precious resources. At the opening, European ambassadors, local and international artists, and attendees gathered to exchange reflections on the meaning behind the images. The photographs not only prompt viewers to appreciate the aesthetic beauty of these water bodies but also highlight the imperative to preserve such landscapes for future generations.
Peter Michalko, the EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan, underscored water’s vital role for both humanity and the planet, emphasizing that initiatives like these strengthen Azerbaijan-Europe relations. Organized with support from Art Council Azerbaijan, the exhibit aims to spark contemplation among visitors and serves as an inspirational wellspring for artists eager to create pieces that reflect the urgency of environmental preservation.
Dadas Mammadov, a cultural representative of Azerbaijan, noted the importance of festivals like FantazEU in building bridges between cultures, with events such as this helping to amplify Azerbaijan’s cultural identity and support cross-cultural understanding. Through the exhibition, attendees can embark on a visual journey across Europe, fostering a renewed sense of interconnectedness through the shared theme of water—a resource that transcends borders and symbolizes life itself.
