What does Armenia want?
Baku/15.09.22/Turan: Yesterday’s speech of Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan in parliament provoked protests. “We want to sign a document, because of which many will criticize us, curse us, call us “traitors”, and the people may even decide to remove us from power. However, we will be satisfied if, as a result, the Republic of Armenia with an area of 29,800 square kilometers receives lasting peace and security. I will sign the solution that this will provide, I say very clearly, I am not interested in what will happen to me, I am interested in what will happen to Armenia,” Prime Minister Pashinyan said.
After this speech, thousands of protesters went to the streets of Yerevan and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The protesters were outraged by his statement that he was ready to sign peace with Azerbaijan. These words were regarded as a readiness to recognize Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan.
Immediately after that, the leaders of the Karabakh separatists made statements that they did not recognize the document, which implies Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan.
Pashinyan was forced to state on air that he had not signed anything and was not going to. He accused the opposition and external forces of "information sabotage". Similar statements were made by Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan and Security Council head Artur Grigoryan.
However, opposition MPs launched a campaign to demand the impeachment of Pashinyan.
Military expert Uzeyir Jafarov talks about tensions at the border and ongoing processes in the “Difficult Question” program.
For a long time the territory of Azerbaijan was shelled from the Basarkechar (Vardenis region) of Armenia, and the ceasefire regime was violated dozens of times every day, Jafarov said. “Moreover, the positions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces were fired from the territories where the Russian peacekeeping contingent is temporarily located”. Armenia staged a large-scale provocation in order to involve the CSTO (Treaty and Collective Security Organization) and Russia in their dirty games, the expert said.
“However, Yerevan miscalculated. As it was expected, the CSTO limited itself to calls to resolve the contradictions exclusively by political and diplomatic methods and agreements, noted in the statements of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia dated November 09, 2020, January 11 and November 26, 2021,” he said.
Jafarov believes that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is at a loss because of the losses incurred.
“The news of the losses produced the effect of a cold shower in the Armenian society. Pashinyan acknowledged the loss of 105 servicemen. At the same time, the Azerbaijani State Commission for the Affairs of Captives, Missing Persons and Hostages reported that Azerbaijan is ready to hand over to the Armenian side the bodies of about 100 Armenian servicemen who died during the fighting on September 12-13,” the expert noted.
