Food Rises in Price by More than 19.3% since 2008

In the last six years, after the last crisis of 2008, food prices increased on average by 19.3%.

The rise in prices is as follows, in 2009 (-14.6%), 2010 (+ 9%), in 2011 (+ 4.3%), in 2012 (+ 2.1%), in 2013 (+2.8%), in 2014 (+ 3.5%). In the past 6 years beef grew most of all - 14.3%, mutton rose by 25%, fish products – by 45%, granulated sugar – by 18.5%, sugar cubes – by 68%, yoghurt – by 25%, local cheese – by 29.4%, sweets – by 11.6% and potatoes – by 50%.

Sour cream fell by 100%, while onions rose, reaching a peak of 1 manat in 2013, and then returned to the mark of 2008 - 0.5 manat per kg. In general, in many products such a trend was observed.

Experts believe that a permanent price increase for six years was due to both internal and external factors. Along with inflation, rise in price of imports and fuel, monopolization provides important influence on the growth of prices.

One expert, explaining the situation, said: "The most important factor influencing the increase in prices over the past few years is monopoly. Most of the products used for the holiday table are bought at monopoly prices. If this is not prevented, the cost of the festive table will grow from year to year."  -0-
