Iran appointed new special representative for Caspian diplomacy
Iranian Foregn Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has appointed Ibragim Rahimpoor a special representative for the Caspian diplomacy, Fars news agency reported on Wednesday.
His duties include talks and meetings with the representatives of other Caspian basin states – Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan – as well as coordination of activities of the Ministries and agencies responsible for solution of Iran’s internal problems related to the Caspian Sea.
Previously Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Mehti Ahundzada was Iran’s special representative for Caspian diplomacy.
Among the main goals of Ibragim Rahimpoor on this position will be defending Iran’s interests in the field of the Caspian Sea status. The Iranian officials insist on equal division of the Caspian Sea between the littoral states, which means each country will get 20% of economic zone. This is in Iran’s best interests, because if the Caspian Sea is divided along the medium line, as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia have already done, Iran will get no more than 13%. By insisting on this type of the Caspian Sea division, Iran does not support the juridical solution to the issue, but it would like to achieve some political dividends.—0--
