Minus Trend in Agricultural Production
This year was one of the bad ones for Azerbaijani farmers. Agricultural production declined.
According to the State Statistical Committee, its scope for ten months at current prices amounted to 4.6 billion manat, which is 3% less than in the comparable period last year. The crop production fell by 8.1%.
Potato production (819,300 tonnes) decreased by 17.5%, vegetables (1,167,900 tons) - by 2%. This year, fewer plantations raised tobacco (2,712.3 tons) and tea (436.2 tons), which decreased the yield by 17% and 20.7%.
According to official figures, this year produced 1,178,800 tons of grain and leguminous crops (excluding maize), which is 20.9% less than in 2013.
There was collected 183,000 tons of maize, which is 1.8% less than last year. By the 1st of November 6% of the corn crop remained not harvested.
If last year (January-October) the crop product (54.4% of agricultural production) was slightly higher than animal product, this year the difference fell to 0.6%.
Vintage (137 500 tons) was at last year's level. Only fruits (701,000 tons) were collected more - by 1.4%.
Experts note the low productivity in the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan because of its extensive development. Labor productivity lags behind the eurozone countries by almost 40 times. In the EU, the agricultural sector employs 4.7% of the population, while in Azerbaijan it employs 40% of the working population. For example, Azerbaijan is dependent on imported wheat and vegetables.
The situation can only be reversed by modernization of rural infrastructure with the participation of foreign investment and technology. -08D-
