European Summit in Yerevan: Day One

On May 5, within the framework of the “Yerevan Dialogue” forum, a meeting of special representatives on the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey took place. Armenia’s Vice Speaker of Parliament Ruben Rubinyan and Ambassador Serdar Kılıç discussed the current state of normalization and the outcomes of the joint working group meeting on the restoration of the Gyumri–Kars railway.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on May 4 after talks in Baku that they intend to deepen their strategic partnership, focusing on energy, investment, and security amid the ongoing reshaping of Europe’s energy architecture.

The high-profile rupture of relations between the Milli Majlis and the European Parliament had been building for a long time. It simply required a suitable trigger — and it emerged in the form of the European Parliament’s resolution of April 30, 2026.

When the European Parliament adopted a resolution on April 30 in support of Armenia’s democratic course, it was more than a symbolic gesture. The document effectively added a new layer of complexity to negotiations between Baku and Yerevan — talks already burdened by history, mistrust, and differing visions of the post-war order.
