Hamas leader Ismail Haniya was killed in Tehran (updated)
"With this action, the criminal Zionist regime has created a pretext for severe punishment, and we consider it our duty to avenge the blood of the one who was martyred on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran," said a statement released by Ali Khamenei's press service.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also threatened to punish those responsible for Haniyeh's death.
"Iran will make the terrorist invaders regret their cowardly act," he wrote on his page in Х.
A direct missile strike on the residence where Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh was staying in Tehran occurred at around 2 a.m. Tehran time, Al Arabiya reports.
Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed when a missile directly hit the place where they were staying.
Hamas blames Israel for the murder, but Israel has not yet commented on the allegations.
The Iranian side has also not yet reported what type of missile or drone was used.

Ismail Haniya, head of the political bureau of the radical Islamist movement Hamas, was killed in Tehran. This was reported on Wednesday morning, July 31, by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as Hamas itself.
Haniya and one of his bodyguards were killed in an attack on his residence in Tehran. The IRGC reported that the incident is currently being investigated and its results will be announced at a later date.
Hamas accused Israel of the attack.
Haniya was killed in an Israeli attack on "his headquarters in Tehran. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) refused to comment on the accusations against it.
On July 30, Haniya arrived in Tehran and met with the spiritual leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Hamnei.
Recall that Haniya arrived in Tehran to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the new President Masoud Pezeshkian.
