The Hezbollah control zone in southern Lebanon is marked in gray
Israel Issues Ultimatum to Hezbollah: Create Security Zone or Face Military Action
In a recent announcement, the head of the National Security Council (NSC) of Israel, Tzachi Hanegbi, revealed the country's intention to establish a security zone in the northern region. This move is aimed at pushing Hezbollah militants away from the Israeli border and deep into Lebanese territory, as reported by the Israeli press.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is reportedly gearing up for potential hostilities in Lebanon, with an operation slated to commence if Hezbollah refuses to voluntarily withdraw from the Israeli border. While Tel Aviv expressed openness to discussing Hezbollah's retreat through joint talks, doubts linger regarding the likelihood of an amicable agreement.
"We can no longer take into account the fact that the Radwan [Hezbollah special forces] units are on the border (...) The situation in the north should change. And she will change," stated Hanegbi.
Sources indicate that Israel has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Hezbollah, demanding their withdrawal beyond the Litany River, approximately 25-30 km from the Israeli border. Failure to comply could lead to an Israeli invasion of Lebanon, with the objective of dismantling Hezbollah's entire infrastructure. Drawing parallels with IDF actions in the Gaza Strip, it appears that Israel considers militant infrastructure to encompass all structures, including civilian buildings.
This development follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's earlier warning, threatening to devastate southern Lebanon and the capital, Beirut, should Hezbollah initiate hostilities against Israel. Tensions escalate as the region braces for potential upheaval, with the outcome dependent on the response to Israel's ultimatum.
