Israeli Defense Minister Proposes "Four Corners Plan" for Gaza Strip's Post-War Governance
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant has unveiled a proposal for the post-war management of the Gaza Strip, presenting the "four corners plan." According to the plan, Hamas would no longer control the territory, with the Palestinian leadership managing the sector under specific conditions, while Israel retains control over security.
The key provisions of the plan include Israel taking responsibility for ensuring security in Gaza. Additionally, the plan outlines joint efforts between Israel and international partners to rebuild the severely damaged Gaza Strip, mainly from Israeli airstrikes. Egypt is designated to play a crucial role, alongside Israel, in operating the primary checkpoint on the Gaza border. The plan supports existing administrative structures in Gaza, provided officials associated with Hamas are not involved.
Galant emphasized that while Palestinians living in Gaza would bear responsibility for governance, this is contingent on a complete renunciation of violence and threats against Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not yet commented on the proposal, and a detailed discussion was interrupted at a cabinet meeting due to disputes over a separate issue involving an investigation into the circumstances of a Hamas attack.
The future of the Gaza Strip remains a divisive issue within Israeli politics and society. While far-right politicians and some Israelis advocate for encouraging Gazans to move elsewhere and rebuilding Jewish settlements in the area, Galant's plan appears more moderate and feasible. However, it is likely to face rejection from the Palestinian side, as Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas has consistently emphasized the full control of Palestinian territories, including security sectors, by Palestinian authorities.
