Czech PM Petr Fiala
The Czech Republic did not support Pashinyan's call to give a targeted assessment of Azerbaijan's establishment of a checkpoint in Lachin
Baku/05.05.23/Turan: Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, speaking at a joint press conference with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala in Prague on May 4, called for the international community to provide a clear and targeted assessment of Azerbaijan's establishment of a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor.
Fiala stated that the Czech Republic would support peaceful initiatives in the South Caucasus. He called the mutual recognition of territorial integrity by Armenia and Azerbaijan, which was enshrined in the Prague Declaration adopted in October 2022, a historic milestone.
In response to a question from a Czech journalist about why the Czech Republic and the EU do not impose sanctions on Azerbaijan, Fiala stated that a targeted response to Azerbaijan's actions in Nagorno-Karabakh and on the border with Armenia is a "unilateral assessment."
"Of course, if I unilaterally assess who is violating the ceasefire, it would not contribute to improving the situation. The common goal of the Czech Republic and the European Union is to achieve stability in the region and ensure long-term peace, guaranteeing the rights of Armenians. We have taken concrete steps in this direction, and our experts are present in the EU monitoring mission," Fiala said.
The Czech prime minister stated that in the pursuit of peace, it is not necessary to focus on obstacles and problems, but rather to achieve long-term peace, which requires goodwill from both sides. Fiala is convinced that the EU is not sitting idle in the situation in the South Caucasus, and Brussels has made a statement expressing concern about the humanitarian situation.—0—
