The ECHR called unlawful the dispersal of the rally in Yerevan in March 2008
Baku / 25.04.19 / Turan: The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) satisfied the complaint of former Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan against the actions of the authorities to disperse the rally on March 1, 2008 in protest against the rigging of the presidential elections. The ECHR recognized a peaceful rally in Yerevan in March 2008 of supporters of the ex-President of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan, during whose dispersal 10 people were killed and another 250 were injured, said on Thursday the lawyer of the former president Vahe Grigoryan. The ECHR ruled that the dispersal of the rally and the use of force had no serious grounds. As a result, the right to freedom of holding peaceful rallies was violated, Grigoryan said in a comment on facebook. Ter-Petrosyan sent an appeal to the ECHR in August 2008 in connection with violations, in particular, the right to hold peaceful assemblies based on political views. In Armenia, after the change of power in the spring of 2018, a lawsuit was filed on the events of 2008. The former president Robert Kocharyan, left the presidency, and prepared to transfer powers to the announced winner of the elections to Serzh Sargsyan. Those who disagreed with the voting results, supporters of presidential candidate Ter-Petrosyan organized protest actions. On March 1, 2008, the Armenian authorities dispersed the participants of the many thousands rally. At the same time 10 people died, more than 250 were injured. The Special Investigation Service of Armenia completed a preliminary investigation of the criminal case initiated in connection with the March 2008 events. The charge of overthrowing the country's constitutional order was brought against former President Kocharyan, who is under arrest. -06D--
