Akif Muradverdiyev Placed in MNS Detention Center

Arrested the day before on charges of smuggling, the former Manager of the President of Azerbaijan Akif Muradverdiev was placed in the detention center of the Ministry of National Security (MNS).

Muradverdiyev's lawyer Fuad Agayev said the imprisonment of Muradverdiyev by MNS and all his arrest is illegal.

Agayev noted in an interview with Turan that «contraband" does not apply to crimes that must be investigated by MNS. It is under the responsibility of the customs authorities.

On the other hand, said the lawyer, the prosecution brought against the man is absolutely groundless. So, he is charged with attempted illegal export of gold coins.

The lawyer had not yet met with his client, and does not know the exact information about the details of the charges and the number of coins he allegedly tried to export.
Earlier a relative of Muradverdiyev said that the arrested is accused of smuggling gold coins of up to 18,000 manat.

Lawyer Agayev noted that Muradverdiyev was detained in the neutral zone of the airport, when he had passed three controls - security services of the airport at the entrance, customs and border control and no one had presented any claims to him.

"And anyway, why should Akif Muradverdiyev, even if he had the coins, take them out with him from the country? This is an absurd accusation," Agayev said.

He drew attention to the fact that, likewise in 2005, the airport services arrested the former head of Azpetrol, brother of the former economic development minister Rafig Aliyev. He was then accused of trying to export a large sum of cash while he could safely use his bank card and send the money abroad.

"Apparently the fantasy of the law enforcement agencies that have to carry out orders for the arrest is very little and they cannot invent anything more plausible or new,"  Agayev said.

Muradverdiyev had previously been subjected to criminal prosecution.

Before the parliamentary elections of 2005, he was arrested along with other senior officials on charges of attempting to overthrow the government.

He was subsequently convicted of economic crimes to 6 years of imprisonment.

However, in early 2008, he was paroled from prison. -06B -
