Ali Hasanov: There are no arrested bloggers in the country
Baku/06.11.12/Turan in Azerbaijan: Bloggers are not persecuted, and none of them are in jail, journalists were told by the chief ideologue of the authorities, Ali Hasanov, within the framework of the Global International Forum on Internet Governance.
Hasanov also claimed that the authorities do not censor expression of opinion on the Internet. "They can freely express their thoughts, which testifies to the freedom of the Internet in the country," he said.
Over the past year, more than 10 bloggers have been arrested or convicted in Azerbaijan. -26D-

On January 13, the trial in the case of public activist Nijat Ibrahim continued in the Baku Serious Crimes Court under the chairmanship of Judge Aygun Gurbanova. The trial was suspended after Ibrahim, in protest against the illegal arrest, began banging his head against the "aquarium cage", trying to commit suicide. The International Committee of Concerned Scholars (ICS) has appealed to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, requesting his assistance in securing the release of the arrested researcher, Igbal Abilov. The ICS expressed concern that Abilov's arrest "may be related to his research on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan, conducted in collaboration with scholars from Armenia."
