Aliyev and Scholz discuss normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met on 18 July within the framework of the European Political Community summit in Oxford to discuss the normalization process between Baku and Yerevan.
According to the website of the Azerbaijani leader, Scholz expressed support for the peace agenda between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Earlier, in April, the Azerbaijani President met with the Armenian Prime Minister with the participation of Scholz.
It was followed by a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia organised by Germany with its support.
During his meeting with Scholz, Aliyev emphasized the progress made in the area of border delimitation and demarcation as part of the negotiation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani President also reported on the coordination of documents related to the delimitation process.
Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan supports the peace agenda, the early signing of the peace treaty and the peace process. However, in his opinion, for this purpose, first of all, it is necessary to change the provisions in the Armenian constitution containing territorial claims against Azerbaijan, and in particular, the annexation of the Karabakh region to Armenia.
Armenia's territorial claims against Azerbaijan should be put an end to on a constitutional basis, Aliyev said.
It was emphasized that these issues were also discussed at the recent meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia held in Washington with the support of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
At the meeting, the process of preparation for the COP29 was discussed. The co-operation between Azerbaijan and Germany in this sphere was approved and highly appreciated.
The Azerbaijani head of state noted that in connection with SOR29 Baku will continue its efforts aimed at achieving consensus and enhancing solidarity between the countries of the world, in particular the Global South and the Global North.
During the talk, Azerbaijan's contribution to Europe's energy security was highly appreciated.
The sides also exchanged views on various aspects of bilateral ties between Germany and Azerbaijan, and discussed other issues of mutual interest.
