Aliyev urges Armenia not to miss the chance to achieve peace with Azerbaijan

Baku / 08.03.23 / Turan: President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev expressed hope on Wednesday that Armenia would "positively respond to the remarks" of Baku on the peace agreement.

“Some time ago we presented our proposal, which is based on the norms and principles of international law. We have received comments from Armenia. In response, we sent them our comments. So the process is underway and we hope to see the same strong political will from Armenia,” Aliyev said in a press statement after meeting with Latvian President Egils Levits.

He expressed hope that Yerevan would make the "right decision" and "won't try to buy time, as it was during the occupation," which led to a war that ended with the liberation of Azerbaijani territories.

“Unfortunately, we had to do it by force. Although we could do it by political means, if Armenia behaved constructively,” Aliyev stressed.

Therefore, Baku expects that Armenia will not waste time and respond positively to the proposals of Azerbaijan, which are supported by many international actors. “Despite the destruction and long-term occupation of our territories, we believe that the page of hatred must be turned,” he said.

Aliyev spoke in favor of creating a peaceful South Caucasus, and the countries of the region can use the experience of close cooperation between the Baltic countries.

Levits, for his part, noted that Latvia, as a member state of the European Union (EU), is interested in close cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan.

He also noted that the Embassy of Latvia performs the function of NATO coordinator in Azerbaijan, and this mandate will be extended until 2024. "I see that Azerbaijan and NATO have a mutual interest in closer cooperation on security issues," the Latvian president added.

As for the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Riga stands for a settlement based on international law. “And international law means the territorial integrity of countries… A sustainable peace can only be achieved if it is based on international law and territorial integrity,” said Levits.

He also said that the national airline Air Baltic is preparing to resume direct flights between Riga and Baku in May this year.—06B-
