Armenian Side Confirms Seizure of Heights in Nakhchivan by Azerbaijani Army

Baku / 09.06.18 / Turan: Reports disseminated in the media and social networks on these days about the liberation of the Gunnut village and a number of strategic heights on the border of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) with Armenia have been officially confirmed after long silence or unwillingness to comment on informal sources.

As reported on Saturday by the Nuhjihan state news agency of NAR with reference to the press service of the Separate Combined Army stationed in NAR, at the end of May the village of Gunnut of the Sharur region, occupied in 1992, was liberated. The important strategic heights located around the village were also liberated. In particular, the Azerbaijani army liberated the mountain Hunut, the hill Agbulag, and the mountains Gizilgaya and Mehridag, thus occupying more favorable positions.

The Arpa village in Daralayaz (Areni in the Armenian version) was also taken under control.

In total, a territory of over 11,000 hectares, including 8,000 hectares suitable for agriculture, has been taken under control by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.

The control of the mountain Gizilgaya at an altitude of 1,683 meters above sea level is of particular importance, since it allows the Azerbaijani army to control the Yerevan-Yeghegnadzor-Goris-Lachin-Khankendi highway.

For the purpose of reliable protection of the territory, a new road with a length of 50 km has been completed, and roads with a total length of more than 50 km have been reconstructed.

Local residents have already visited the graves of relatives.

Since May, the state media outlets have been silent, without answering journalists' questions about what is happening in Nakhchivan. From there, as well as from Yerevan, there were sketchy information about the progress of the Azerbaijani army from the Nakhchivan site.

On June 1, the Lragir website confirmed this information, informing that the new Defense Minister David Tonoyan, responding to a question about the advance of Azerbaijani troops in Nakhchivan, said the situation is under control, and risks are effectively leveled. "Azerbaijan is moving in its territory, and at the moment there is no need for intervention, including by the CSTO," Tonoyan said.

A military expert Arkady Grigoryan reported the Azerbaijani side really took 1-2 heights, but this does not change the alignment of forces, since the dominant heights are under the control of the Armenian Armed Forces. He noted that the Armenian side is also intensively conducting engineering work.

Press Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Artsrun Hovhannisyan, commenting on the death of an Azerbaijani soldier on May 20, said: "The Azerbaijani Armed Forces have started active engineering works to improve their positions in several areas of the border."

On June 1, the Yerevan website Yerkramas reported that the Azerbaijani military actually conducted engineering work on their territory and brought their positions closer to the positions of the Armenian divisions at three sites. As the website razm.info said, "while earlier in certain areas the distance between our posts and posts of Azerbaijan was up to 5 kilometers, now this distance is up to 500-700 meters."

"The new posts of the Azerbaijani army create certain inconveniences for the bordering Armenian village of Areni, but again we emphasize: the Azerbaijani army did not" liberate "any territories, but simply changed its positions on its land. The Azerbaijani village Gunnut allegedly liberated by the Azerbaijani troops is on the Azerbaijani territory and has been empty since 1992," the Armenian website writes.

In social networks, Armenians disseminate information and photos about the appearance of a new Azerbaijani military post over the Armenian village. The villagers are afraid to live under the obvious supervision of Azerbaijani soldiers on duty in the new post, the authors report on Facebook.

In May-June, active fighting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian armies in Nakhchivan was not conducted, and neither side reported any military losses to its military forces. Consequently, the Azerbaijani army moved its posts on the neutral strip, improving positions and expanding the zone of shelling, or control on the Azerbaijani and Armenian territory.

The strategic significance of this can be deduced from an analytical article in Regnum IA:

- In Nakhchivan at the moment there is at least one battalion of the Smerch MLRS (maximum range of 90 km), and a number of T-300 Kasirga MLRS (maximum range is 100-120 km depending on the missile used). Such characteristics do allow fire at Yerevan. However, for this purpose it is necessary to stay about 20-25 km from the border with Armenia. Considering that Armenia has dominant heights in this direction (especially after more than two years ago Armenian special forces occupied a neutral zone, from which "as in the palm of their hand" they can see most of Nakhchivan, enemy launchers can quickly find themselves under the blow of Armenian artillery (152 mm guns Hyacinth-B (maximum range of 30 km) and 130 mm M-46 cannons (for a maximum range of 27 km) are well suited for this task (regnum.ru/news/2226796 .html).--0--
