Azerbaijan and Romania to sign a new agreement on energy supplies
Baku/02.02.23/Turan: The issues discussed and resolved during the current visit of the President of Romania to Azerbaijan are of strategic importance. This was stated by President Ilham Aliyev at a joint briefing with President of Romania Klaus Johannes.
According to him, the parties intend to increase mutual trade and this task has been set before the Intergovernmental Commission, which will meet in Bucharest.
Energy also plays an important role in bilateral relations. “Now our cooperation is entering a new stage. An agreement was signed in Bucharest on the supply of Azerbaijani natural gas to Romania. Through the infrastructure of Romania, Azerbaijani gas will be transported to other European countries,” Aliyev said.
Another area is green energy. A very important step has been taken in this direction, and the first Green Energy Advisory Council will be held on February 3rd. “This is a very strategic project, a project that requires huge investments, a project that connects several countries, two seas. Of course, we hope that tomorrow's first meeting of the steering committee will also offer a roadmap for future joint actions,” Aliyev said.
In turn, Klaus Iohannis said that the South Caucasus region is of great importance both for Romania and for the European Union.
Romania is the first EU member to sign a document on strategic partnership with Azerbaijan.
During this visit of Ilham Aliyev to Bucharest on December 17, 2022, an Agreement on Strategic Partnership in the field of development and transmission of green energy was signed between the governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary.
“We want to deepen the strategic partnership between our countries and implement regional projects of strategic importance. We are also ready to cooperate in the fields of energy, trade, investment, digitalization and agriculture,” Johannes said.
He thanked Aliyev that since January Azerbaijan has started transporting additional volumes of gas to Romania.
“Tomorrow, the oil companies of the two countries - Romgaz and SOCAR will sign a new agreement, according to which additional gas will be supplied to Romania in 2023-2024,” he said.
In addition, Romania and Azerbaijan intend to develop cooperation in the field of transport between Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia.
“One of the last issues that we discussed with Mr. Aliyev was Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Black Sea region. We stressed the importance of solidarity in such a difficult situation and highly appreciated the position of Azerbaijan on these issues,” Johannes said in conclusion.
It should be noted that during the day Aliyev held talks with Johanness one-on-one and with the participation of delegations.
On February 3, Aliyev and Johanness will take part in the meeting of the Advisory Council on the Southern Gas Corridor. -0-
