Azerbaijan wants full membership in EITI - Aliyev
On 1 February Ilham Aliyev received the head of the Board of the Transparency Initiative in the Mining Industry (EITI) Frederick Rheinfelden, and discussed with him the issues Azerbaijan in this Organization. According to the official report, Baku intends to continue cooperation with the EITI and to conduct measures to restore the status of full membership of Azerbaijan in this organization.
In March 2015 Azerbaijan was reduced to the status of "observer" because of the civil society rights violations, the introduction of legislative restrictions, absence of transparency and high level of corruption. In October, at the meeting of the Board of the EITI, Azerbaijan’s status was not upgraded because it failed to fulfill promises to eliminate the existing shortcomings and create normal conditions for civil society in the face of the Coalition of non-governmental organizations. -02D-
