Azerbaijani leadership ignores Eastern Partnership Forum in Tbilisi
Baku / 11.12.18 / Turan: On December 10-12, the Tenth Assembly of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum is held in Tbilisi. This annual event brings together civil society organizations from all six Eastern Partnership countries and the EU. It has been held every year since 2009.
In October-November, Azerbaijani official structures launched a campaign of criticism of the organizers of the Assembly, who did not invite representatives of the Azerbaijani authorities to participate in the Tbilisi forum. In particular, on November 25, members of the Azerbaijan National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, holding "wide-ranging discussions of the draft resolution of the 10th Annual Assembly of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum in the Azerbaijani media, declared the inadmissibility of ignoring the Karabakh problem in the project.
On November 22, the Foreign Ministry said that "information regarding the fact that Azerbaijan is not invited to the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum is being investigated." But the next day, the deputy head of the EU Delegation in Baku, Denis Daniilidis, stated that "representatives of governments from all Eastern Partnership countries, including from Azerbaijan, are invited to the meeting."
The conflict seemed to be settled, official representatives of the country could participate in the Tbilisi forum. However, today the forum participant, economics professor GubadIbadoglu said that representatives of the Azerbaijani government do not participate in the event. "The Azerbaijani authorities have not benefited from such an important event this time. For the second year the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has received invitations, but does not participate in the Civil Society Forums. And the Armenian Foreign Ministry is represented here by the foreign minister and adviser to the acting prime minister. The Prime Minister of Georgia also is taking part in the Forum, the Speaker of Parliament spoke at the opening. "Even the representatives of the authorities of Belarus are here," added G. Ibadoglu.
Azerbaijan is represented at the Tbilisi forum by an extensive delegation consisting of opposition and neutral public figures of the country. -0-
