Briefing in Kiev in Defense of Fikret Huseynli
Baku / 03/30/18 / Turan: Representatives of Ukrainian human rights organizations, Freedom House and Reporters Without Borders (RBG) held a joint briefing in Kiev on the journalist Fikret Huseynli"s case.
Huseynli was detained on October 14, 2017 when flying from Kiev to Dusseldorf on the basis of Azerbaijan's request through Interpol. In Azerbaijan he is accused of fraud and illegal crossing of borders.
On October 18, 2017 Borispol City Court of Ukraine arrested him for 18 days to consider the issue of his extradition to Azerbaijan.
On October 27 the Lukyanovka court of Kiev released Huseynli on bail of the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Mikola Knyazhitsky and a public figure Boris Zakharov. At the same time, the court rejected the State Prosecutor's request to extradite Huseynli to Azerbaijan.
The Kiev prosecutor's office filed an appeal against the release of Huseynli, demanding his arrest.
The trial began on January 17, but was postponed four times. On February 13, the court refused extradition.
Nevertheless, on March 16 the prosecutor's office petitioned for an extension of the extradition examination for another two months. However, the Kiev Pechora Court gave the time only until April 2.
At the briefing, the lawyer Dmitry Mazurok announced the illegality of Huseynli's extradition. The representative of the Ukrainian Human Rights Center Tatiana Pechonchuk spoke about the situation with human rights in Azerbaijan and stated about the danger of Huseynli's extradition to Baku for his life. RBG coordinator Maxim Butkevich reported political motives for accusations against Huseynli and persecution of him because of journalistic activities. Freedom House representative Matthew Schaaf said that international human rights organizations will defend Huseynli to the end.
Huseynli himself showed a letter written by the deputy of the Parliament of Ukraine Mustafa Cemiloglu to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. He also noted that Azerbaijani political emigrants have always been on the side of Ukraine and therefore expects justice from Kiev.
At the press conference on Skype, the Turan TV journalist Emin Ahmedbeyli and the human rights activist Leila Yunus also spoke, urging the Ukrainian authorities to be on the side of justice and democracy. -03B06-
